The hamlet was not mentioned either in the Domesday Book of 1086, nor in later manorial records, presumedly because it has never had a manor, neither was it considered a place of any major importance. This makes tracing the origin or its name difficult, though the -wick ending of the name suggests an Anglo Saxon origin as this is the word for a small dairy farm.
Today the hamlet is small but picturesque, and affords magnificent views of the nearby Chiltern Hills.
