The Order Pinales in the Division Pinophyta, Class Pinopsida includes the true conifers. This order was formerly known as the Coniferales. Only the living yew trees, Order Taxales, are not included in the Pinales. All other conifers, such as cedar, pine, redwood, cypress, spruce, fir, larch, and others, are included here. The distinguishing characteristic is the female cone produced by the Pinales. Some botanists do not separate the Pinopsida into two orders, while others separate the two groups at the level of class (see Taxales).
