Pioneering

Pioneering is the craft of creating structures using rough wooded spars and rope. Spars are joined by lashings and knots.

The basic knots used in pioneering are:

• Square Knot
• Two Half Hitches
• Taut-Line Hitch
• Timber Hitch
• Clove Hitch
• Bowline
• Sheepshank
• Sheet Bend

The basic lashings used are:

• Square Lashing, used to join two poles at a right angle
• Diagonal Lashing, used to join two poles at an angle other than right
• Round Lashing, used to join two parallel poles

Pioneering is often connected to scouting.
