Poor Righteous Teachers
The
Poor Righteous Teachers are a trio of
African American hip hop musicians, founded in
1989 (see
1989 in music) as a socially aware and devoutly
Islamic group. Wise Intelligent, Culture Freedom and Father Shaheed released their first album,
Holy Intellect, in
1990 (see
1990 in music), followed by
Pure Poverty the following year. Their follow-up and most successful released was
1993's
Black Busines, which drew criticism for alleged
homophobia. Their latest release is
New World Order (
1996, see
1996 in music)
