Private Snafu, numerous war-related cartoons

After the United States joined World War II, the army felt they needed to subject their soldiers to educational and humorous films, so they put Theodore Seuss Giesel (Dr. Seuss), a political cartoonist, in charge of the animation department. Dr. Seuss asked the major studios to put up bids for possible contracts, and Warner Brothers placed the lowest bid, beating Disney, who wanted to own the rights to any characters and cartoons they created, so that they may market them at a later date. Chuck Jones immediately created Private SNAFU, a soldier in the US Army who made many mistakes but eventually learned from them.
