Rails-to-Trails
Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC) is an
American nonprofit organization which works to convert old and abandoned
railroad track beds in the
United States into recreational trails (see also
long-distance trail). Through this process, the corridor is "rail banked", allowing it to be converted back to rail should the need arise. Without this "rail banking" important corridors would be lost to real estate development. RTC was founded in 1986 and has currently more than 100,000 members. The headquarters is located in
Washington, D.C
