\nThe parish has a total area of 1,041 km2 (402 mi2). 1,008 km2 (389 mi2) of it is land and 33 km2 (13 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 3.18% water.
Demographics
\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 9,622 people, 3,414 households, and 2,526 families residing in the parish. The population density is 10/km2 (25/mi2). There are 3,988 housing units at an average density of 4/km2 (10/mi2). The racial makeup of the parish is 57.87% White, 40.91% Black or African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 0.61% from two or more races. 1.01% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,414 households out of which 35.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.50% are married couples living together, 18.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.00% are non-families. 23.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.74 and the average family size is 3.23.
In the parish the population is spread out with 30.10% under the age of 18, 9.30% from 18 to 24, 24.80% from 25 to 44, 21.50% from 45 to 64, and 14.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 90.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.40 males.
The median income for a household in the parish is $23,153, and the median income for a family is $27,870. Males have a median income of $27,132 versus $17,760 for females. The per capita income for the parish is $12,119. 29.90% of the population and 26.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 40.10% are under the age of 18 and 18.90% are 65 or older.
