Robert Leckie (born ?) is an
American author of popular books on the
military history of the United States. As a young man, he served in the 1st Marine Division during
World War II. Their action at
Guadalcanal, where he was a machine gunner, greatly influenced his outlook.
He is a very popular author, with over thirty-five works, many of which continue to be reprinted. He uses a direct and powerful style in describing context and battle actions.
In spite or because of his popularity he has been criticized be some historians as lacking rigor (he uses almost no footnotes). He has also been tagged as politically incorrect for his portrayal of America's enemies and Native Americans.
