\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,557

mi²). 1,553 km² (600 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.22% water.

The independent cities of
Buena Vista and
Lexington are located within the boundaries of Rockbridge County, but are not a part of the county, despite Lexington's status as the county seat.
