Rolla is a city located in Phelps County, Missouri. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 16,367. It is the county seat of Phelps County6.

census of 2000, there are 16,367 people, 6,514 households, and 3,543 families residing in the city. The population density is 559.2/km² (1,448.7/mi²). There are 7,221 housing units at an average density of 246.7/km² (639.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 89.20% White, 2.92% African American, 0.46% Native American, 4.87% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 0.73% from other races, and 1.69% from two or more races. 1.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 6,514 households out of which 26.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.0% are married couples living together, 10.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 45.6% are non-families. 35.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.20 and the average family size is 2.88. In the city the population is spread out with 20.1% under the age of 18, 25.3% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 16.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 28 years. For every 100 females there are 112.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 114.2 males. The median income for a household in the city is $26,479, and the median income for a family is $38,975. Males have a median income of $31,861 versus $19,625 for females.
