Salem is a city located in Salem County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,857. It is the county seat of Salem County6.

1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.3 km² (2.8 mi²). 6.8 km² (2.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.79% water.

Demographics

census of 2000, there are 5,857 people, 2,383 households, and 1,463 families residing in the city. The population density is 866.4/km² (2,244.3/mi²). There are 2,863 housing units at an average density of 423.5/km² (1,097.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 37.46% White, 56.77% African American, 0.60% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.38% from other races, and 3.55% from two or more races. 4.88% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,383 households out of which 32.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 27.7% are married couples living together, 29.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.6% are non-families. 34.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 3.10. In the city the population is spread out with 31.0% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 20.6% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 80.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 73.6 males. The median income for a household in the city is $25,846, and the median income for a family is $29,699. Males have a median income of $35,389 versus $24,354 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,559. 26.6% of the population and 24.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 35.3% are under the age of 18 and 12.1% are 65 or older.
