According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,002 km² (387 mi²). 993 km² (383 mi²) of it is land and 10 km² (4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.95% water.

The racial makeup of the county is 94.14% White, 4.06% Black or African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.20% Asian American, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 0.95% from two or more races. 0.97% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
