Sam Steele

{| class=rimage | |} Superintendent Samuel Benfield Steele (January 5, 1851 - January 30, 1919) was a famous member of the North West Mounted Police. He was one of the original members of the force and played a large part in establishing its reputation. Among many other feats, he is credited with turning the Yukon goldrush of 1895 into one of the most orderly events of its kind in history. In 1900 he was seconded to command Lord Strathcona's Horse, a Canadian light cavalry unit sent to South Africa during the Boer war and did so with distinction.
