Satmar
Satmar is the largest
Hasidic group in existence today. Originating in Hungary, the members were dispersed by the
Holocaust and
World War II. Large numbers of Satmar
Hasidim live in Williamsberg and Kiryas Joel in
New York, as well as
London and
Israel. The sect is most widely known for the opposition to
Zionism of its most prominent leaders, Rabbi Moses Teitelbaum and his predecessor Rabbi
Joel Teitelbaum.
