Shaanxi (陝西 in pinyin: Shan3 xi1) (Wade-Giles: Shensi) is a northwestern province of the People's Republic of China, and includes portions of the Loess Plateau on the middle reaches of the Yellow River as well as the Qinling Mountains across the southern part of the province. The double a in Shaan is used to distinguish it from Shanxi. Shan = 山 (mountain), xi = west.
