Shakopee is a city located in Scott County, Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 20,568. It is the county seat of Scott County6.

Geography

\nAccording to the
United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 73.7 km² (28.5 mi²). 69.9 km² (27.0 mi²) of it is land and 3.8 km² (1.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.10% water.

Demographics

\nAs of the
census of 2000, there are 20,568 people, 7,540 households, and 5,360 families residing in the city. The population density is 294.1/km² (761.7/mi²). There are 7,805 housing units at an average density of 111.6/km² (289.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 91.61% White, 1.33% African American, 0.94% Native American, 2.41% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 2.14% from other races, and 1.54% from two or more races. 4.40% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 7,540 households out of which 38.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.2% are married couples living together, 8.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.9% are non-families. 21.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 3.12. In the city the population is spread out with 27.5% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 38.8% from 25 to 44, 17.5% from 45 to 64, and 7.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 98.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.6 males. The median income for a household in the city is $59,137, and the median income for a family is $66,885. Males have a median income of $41,662 versus $32,244 for females. The per capita income for the city is $25,128. 3.5% of the population and 1.8% of families are below the poverty line.
