Slaton is a city located in Lubbock County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,109.

Demographics

census of 2000, there are 6,109 people, 2,253 households, and 1,610 families residing in the city. The population density is 435.2/km² (1,126.7/mi²). There are 2,565 housing units at an average density of 182.7/km² (473.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 72.35% White, 7.76% African American, 0.59% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 17.07% from other races, and 1.98% from two or more races. 42.27% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,253 households out of which 33.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.0% are married couples living together, 15.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.5% are non-families. 25.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.67 and the average family size is 3.22. In the city the population is spread out with 29.0% under the age of 18, 10.3% from 18 to 24, 23.5% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 16.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 87.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.7 males. The median income for a household in the city is $25,915, and the median income for a family is $31,224. Males have a median income of $26,696 versus $20,601 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,087. 23.0% of the population and 21.6% of families are below the poverty line.
