Solomon Burke
Solomon Burke (b.
March 21,
1936) is a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and important
country and
soul music pioneer. He began his adult life as a preacher in
Philadelphia, and soon moved on to hosting a
gospel radio show. In the
1960s, he signed with
Atlantic Records and began moving towards more secular music. Though he released a few moderate pop hits and major
R&B songs, Burke didn't break into the mainstream. His biggest hit was a cover of
Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Proud Mary".
