South Pass, Wyoming
South Pass, Wyoming is a pass in the Wind River Range of the
Rocky Mountains. From this pass flows the Sweetwater River to the east and Pacific Creek to the west. The first trappers to discover this pass were the Astorians in
1812. The knowledge of the pass was lost which caused trappers to have to cross further north. The northern route was longer, crossed an extra range and offered a shorter season for crossing. In
1824,
Jedediah Smith rediscovered this pass.
