Strain gauge
A
strain gauge is a device used to measure deformation (
strain) of an object. It usually consists of a flexible, easily-stretched backing material with a wire glued to it in a zig-zag pattern. As the object is deformed, the wire is stretched, causing its
resistance to change. This resistance change, usually measured using a
Wheatstone bridge circuit, can be used to calculate the exact amount of deformation.
