The second payload was the U.S. Microgravity Payload-3 (USMP-3), with several scientific experiments performed by telescience in the payload bay.

Mission objective
The main payload was the reflight of the Tethered Satellite System (TSS-1R), a joint US-Italian project originally flown with STS-46. However as the tether jammed during the first flight it could not gather the expected scientific data and a reflight was thus necessary.External links
