The Tangara train has become under scrutiny recently due the inquiries associated with the recent Waterfall rail disaster on January 31, 2003, notably with faults with the dead-man's brake and other issues. However they remain as being one of the most comfortable and cleanest trains in comparison with the Comeng and Goninan R and S sets.
The Tangara was also retooled and an intercity version, named "Odyssey" was put into service. It is distinguished by yellow panel flashings at the front and rear, and inside sports improvements for intercity travellers, such as onboard toilets and fresh water dispensers, high backed revertible seats (the original Tangaras had their seat position fixed), and luggage racks.
