Teito Rapid Transit Authority
The
Teito Rapid Transit Authority (帝都高速度交通営団
Teito Kōsokudo Kōtsū Eidan, abbreviated
Eidan or
TRTA) is one of the two operators of
Tokyo's
metro system. TRTA is administered by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, and jointly funded by the national and metropolitan governments. It was formed in
1941, although its oldest lines date back to
1927.
The TRTA is one of the last government-administered rail companies in Japan; it was kept in the transport minister's portfolio after the dissolution of Japan National Railways into the modern JR group. However, the line has been scheduled for privatization for some time: in 2004, it will be privatized and renamed to the Tokyo Subway Co., Ltd. (東京地下鉄株式会社)
The other metro operator in Tokyo is the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation, or Toei.
