Terrytown, Nebraska

Terrytown is a village located in Scotts Bluff County, Nebraska. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 646. Terrytown is located on the bank of the North Platte River between the cities of Scottsbluff and Gering, Nebraska. Separated only by the river, Scottsbluff and Gering have grown together to form the 8th largest urban area in Nebraska, which incorporates the small village of Terrytown as well.

Terrytown was founded by Terry Carpenter, a former mayor of Scottbluff and a famous Nebraska state senator in the 1950s and 1960s.

Geography

Terrytown is located at 41°50'50" North, 103°40'2" West (41.847320, -103.667312)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 km² (0.4 mi²). 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.44% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 646 people, 246 households, and 150 families residing in the village. The population density is 593.9/km² (1,521.0/mi²). There are 271 housing units at an average density of 249.1/km² (638.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 73.22% White, 0.00% African American, 6.81% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 17.18% from other races, and 2.79% from two or more races. 44.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 246 households out of which 42.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.6% are married couples living together, 19.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.0% are non-families. 31.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.63 and the average family size is 3.39.

In the village the population is spread out with 36.7% under the age of 18, 11.1% from 18 to 24, 30.5% from 25 to 44, 13.5% from 45 to 64, and 8.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 26 years. For every 100 females there are 91.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.5 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $16,536, and the median income for a family is $19,583. Males have a median income of $20,192 versus $13,393 for females. The per capita income for the village is $8,550. 41.0% of the population and 44.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 46.7% are under the age of 18 and 26.7% are 65 or older.
