The Chevin
The Chevin is the name given to the south side of
Wharfedale near the town of
Otley. A roman road ran along the top of the Chevin between the towns of Eboracum (
York) and Olicana (
Ilkley). The modern road there is still called Yorkgate. The chevin is largely covered in attractive old woodland and heathland. The name comes from the Celtic 'Cefyn' or 'Cefu' meaning a 'ridge'. It is a part of the Carboniferous Millstone Grit Group.
