The movie was adapted by Sonia Chernus and Philip Kaufman from the novel Gone to Texas by Forrest Carter. It was the first movie directed by Clint Eastwood.
It was nominated for the Academy Award for Original Music Score. The film has been deemed "culturally significant" by the Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry.
