Tityas
In
Greek mythology,
Tityas (also spelled
Tityus) was a giant, the son of
Elara, one of
Zeus' lovers. He hid her from his wife,
Hera, by placing her deep beneath the earth. This was where she gave birth to Tityas, who is sometimes said to be the son of Elara and
Gaia, the earth goddess, for this reason.
Tityas attempted to rape Leto and was slain by Apollo and Artemis. As punishment, he was stretched out in Hades and tortured by two vultures, which fed on his liver.
