Treaty of Ghent
On
December 24,
1814, the
United States and
Great Britain signed the
Treaty of Ghent, ending the
War of 1812. Despite the signing of the treaty, the war continued for several weeks, including the
Battle of New Orleans as the news of the treaty took time to reach the hinterlands of
North America.
The treaty did not resolve the main issue that engendered the war, the impressment of sailors. However, as the Napoleonic Wars ended, that practice too began to fade.
