Treaty of Ryswick
The
1697 Treaty of Ryswick settled the
War of the Grand Alliance or the
War of the League of Augsburg (called
King William's War in North America) which pitted
France against the
Grand Alliance of
England,
Spain, and the
Netherlands. France under
Louis XIV retained
Strasbourg but returned other territories gained since
1679. By the treaty,
Savoy was recognized as independent, and
William III was recognized as King of England. The Netherlands received some commercial concessions.
