University of Bologna
The
University of Bologna is a
university in
Bologna,
Italy. The university received a
charter from
Frederick I Barbarossa (
1158); but, appears to have existed since, at least, the
1080s, making it perhaps the first and most long-lived university in the western world (which arguably invented the university as an institutional form, at least in the modern sense of the word "university"). The University of Bologna is
historically notable for its
teaching of
canon and
civil law.
