Its origins trace back to Singapore, and grew out of King Edward VII College of Medicine (est. 1905) and Raffles College (est. 1929). The two joined to form the University of Malaya in October 1949, then serving the Federation of Malaya and Singapore.
In 1959, the university split into two divisions -- one in Singapore (later becoming the National University of Singapore and the other in Kuala Lumpur (retaining the name University of Malaya).
