.
The first
Midway
(AG-41) was the
Oritani
and then the
Tyree
before being chartered as a general auxiliary in
1942
, renamed to
Panay
in
1943
, and returned to her owner in
1946
.
The second
Midway
(CVE-63) was an
escort aircraft carrier
commissioned in
1943
, renamed
St. Lo
one week later, and sunk in the
Battle of Leyte Gulf
one year later.
The third
Midway
(CV-41)
was an
aircraft carrier
commissioned just after the end of
World War II
, and in service until
1992
. The carrier is expected to become a
museum ship
in
San Diego, California
.
