Van Buren is a town located in Aroostook County, Maine. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,369.

Demographics

census of 2000, there are 2,369 people, 1,005 households, and 627 families residing in the town. The population density is 218.3/km² (565.8/mi²). There are 1,119 housing units at an average density of 103.1 persons/km² (267.2 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.78% White, 0.13% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.04% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. 0.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,005 households out of which 24.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.4% are married couples living together, 9.5% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 37.6% are non-families. 33.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.16 and the average family size is 2.69. In the town the population is spread out with 18.8% under the age of 18, 5.4% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 28.1% from 45 to 64, and 23.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 46 years. For every 100 females there are 87.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.9 males.
