Geography

\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,928 km² (744 mi²). 1,833 km² (708 mi²) of it is land and 94 km² (36 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.89% water.

census2 of 2000, there are 5,974 people, 2,506 households, and 1,643 families residing in the county. The population density is 3/km² (8/mi²). There are 3,144 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (4/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 86.58% White, 0.03% Black or African American, 11.77% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.07% from other races, and 1.37% from two or more races. 0.60% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,506 households out of which 26.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.40% are married couples living together, 8.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.40% are non-families. 31.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.89. In the county, the population is spread out with 24.10% under the age of 18, 6.50% from 18 to 24, 22.40% from 25 to 44, 25.00% from 45 to 64, and 21.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 94.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.30 males.
