Wheeler is a city located in Wheeler County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,378. It is the county seat of Wheeler County6.

Demographics

census of 2000, there are 1,378 people, 520 households, and 365 families residing in the city. The population density is 347.7/km² (900.4/mi²). There are 612 housing units at an average density of 154.4/km² (399.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 85.05% White, 1.81% African American, 0.44% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 10.60% from other races, and 1.96% from two or more races. 18.07% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 520 households out of which 33.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.8% are married couples living together, 8.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.8% are non-families. 28.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 3.04. In the city the population is spread out with 25.0% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 21.4% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 21.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 88.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.7 males. The median income for a household in the city is $31,375, and the median income for a family is $36,667. Males have a median income of $27,679 versus $16,723 for females.
