The company was formed in 1995 as a spinoff by Ted Rappaport,a professor at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. Roger Skidmore, a graduate student in electrical engineering, joined as the first employee in 1998. In 2002, Prof. Rappaport took up a faculty position with the University of Texas at Austin, and unfortunately for West Virginia's hopes of developing its wireless industry, the company moved to Austin, Texas with him.
Wireless Valley is a privately-held company, and so its financials are not available, but in an Austin Business Journal article dated January 2002, and online at http://www.traq.com/news_011602.shtml, Skidmore said the company had seven employees and posted a revenue of US$1.5 million in 2001.
The company owns the registered trademark for Wireless Valley®. It has been awarded US software patent 6,442,507, and many other patents, covering techniques for site surveys, site-specific measurement acquisition, and engineering, maintenance, and management of in-building networks.
