Zend’s founders are the designers of PHP 4 and the Zend Engine 1.0; on which all PHP sites and applications are run. Zend is also currently leading the design and development of PHP 5 and the Zend Engine 2.0. The company is an active leader in the PHP and open source communities, and plays a central role in the explosive growth of PHP, which is now being used in over 9 million web sites worldwide. As a leader of the PHP market, Zend’s web site zend.com serves as a community resource and information-sharing location, with over 300,000 unique visitors per month.
Zend is a portmanteau of the names of its founders, Zeev Suraski and Andi Gutmans. Both Zeev and Andi, along with much of the company, are graduates of the world renowned Technion (Israel Institute of Technology).
