Androscoggin County is a county located in the U.S. State of Maine. As of 2000, the population is 103,793. Its county seat is Auburn6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,288 km² (497 mi²). 1,218 km² (470 mi²) of it is land and 70 km² (27 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.42% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 103,793 people, 42,028 households, and 27,192 families residing in the county. The population density is 85/km² (221/mi²). There are 45,960 housing units at an average density of 38/km² (98/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.98% White, 0.66% Black or African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.55% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.28% from other races, and 1.22% from two or more races. 0.95% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 42,028 households out of which 30.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.60% are married couples living together, 10.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.30% are non-families. 28.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.91.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.90% under the age of 18, 9.10% from 18 to 24, 29.70% from 25 to 44, 22.90% from 45 to 64, and 14.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 94.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $35,793, and the median income for a family is $44,082. Males have a median income of $31,622 versus $22,366 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,734. 11.10% of the population and 7.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 13.80% are under the age of 18 and 11.00% are 65 or older.
