Demographics

census of 2000, there are 4,420 people, 1,707 households, and 1,206 families residing in the town. The population density is 449.1/km² (1,162.4/mi²). There are 1,798 housing units at an average density of 182.7/km² (472.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.99% White, 0.63% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.41% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 1.22% from two or more races. 1.06% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,707 households out of which 36.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.1% are married couples living together, 12.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.3% are non-families. 22.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.02. In the town the population is spread out with 27.4% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 32.6% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 10.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 96.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.3 males.
