CTY is the first program of its kind started by Dr. Stephens at Johns Hopkins University in order to identify and provide learning opportunites for academically talented youths. Over the years, it has provided summer camps at colleges and universities where students can learn more than they do in schools. More recently, it has provided Distance learning opportunites to many youths around the world.
CTY has three age levels defined for students wishing to go into their program. Each one has its own camp sites, achievement tests, and classes.
The youngest age group is from 2nd to 4th grade. Students wishing to go to CTY then must take the CTY-administered SCAT exam. If they do well enough, they can go to a daycamp in Baltimore, Maryland or West Los Angeles, California. Only students who live near these areas can go to CTY in this age group.
The intermediate age group is from grades 5 through 6. Students at that age take the PLUS test and go to residential camps in various coleges and universities around the country.
The oldest age group is from 7th to 11th grade. Students from that age group take the SAT. If they score high enough, they can go to a residential site, but at different coleges than the 5-6 group does. This oldest group often calls the two younger groups "baby CTY", although not pejoratively.
