census2 of 2000, there are 3,232 people, 1,275 households, and 887 families residing in the town. The population density is 660.3/km² (1,709.9/mi²). There are 1,331 housing units at an average density of 271.9/km² (704.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 80.57% White, 14.17% Black or African American, 0.65% Native American, 1.08% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.11% from other races, and 2.38% from two or more races. 2.94% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,275 households out of which 36.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.7% are married couples living together, 13.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.4% are non-families. 26.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.06. In the town the population is spread out with 26.9% under the age of 18, 10.9% from 18 to 24, 34.4% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 6.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.1 males. The median income for a household in the town is $39,551, and the median income for a family is $44,318. Males have a median income of $31,553 versus $21,903 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,932. 8.5% of the population and 7.9% of families are below the poverty line.
