Pulaski County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of 2000, the population is 361,474. The county seat is Little Rock.
Pulaski County was formed on 15 December 1818 and was named after Count Casimir Pulaski who served under General George Washington in the American Revolution.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,092 km² (808 mi²). 1,996 km² (771 mi²) of it is land and 96 km² (37 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.58% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 361,474 people, 147,942 households, and 95,718 families residing in the county. The population density is 181/km² (469/mi²). There are 161,135 housing units at an average density of 81/km² (209/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 63.96% White, 31.87% Black or African American, 0.39% Native American, 1.25% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.09% from other races, and 1.40% from two or more races. 2.44% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 147,942 households out of which 30.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.90% are married couples living together, 15.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.30% are non-families. 30.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.98.
In the county the population is spread out with 25.20% under the age of 18, 9.60% from 18 to 24, 31.10% from 25 to 44, 22.60% from 45 to 64, and 11.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 92.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.20 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $38,120, and the median income for a family is $46,523. Males have a median income of $33,131 versus $25,943 for females. The per capita income for the county is $21,466. 13.30% of the population and 10.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 19.90% are under the age of 18 and 9.80% are 65 or older.
