Kent County is a county located in the U.S. State of Rhode Island. As of 2000, the population is 167,090.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 487 km2 (188 mi2). 441 km2 (170 mi2) of it is land and 46 km2 (18 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 9.53% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 167,090 people, 67,320 households, and 44,969 families residing in the county. The population density is 379/km2 (982/mi2). There are 70,365 housing units at an average density of 160/km2 (414/mi2). The racial makeup of the county is 95.54% White, 0.93% Black or African American, 0.23% Native American, 1.34% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.65% from other races, and 1.28% from two or more races. 1.69% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 67,320 households out of which 29.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.70% are married couples living together, 10.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.20% are non-families. 27.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the county, the population is spread out with 23.20% under the age of 18, 7.00% from 18 to 24, 30.50% from 25 to 44, 24.20% from 45 to 64, and 15.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 92.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $47,617, and the median income for a family is $57,491. Males have a median income of $40,052 versus $29,130 for females. The per capita income for the county is $23,833. 6.60% of the population and 4.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 7.90% are under the age of 18 and 8.10% are 65 or older.
