On February 20, 2003, The Station nightclub fire was caused by pyrotechnics used indoors. The fire killed 96 patrons, and the story made national news, partly because the Department of Homeland Security investigated.
There are 12,498 households out of which 28.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.4% are married couples living together, 13.1% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 38.4% are non-families. 31.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.97.
In the town the population is spread out with 22.4% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 32.0% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 92.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.3 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $39,505, and the median income for a family is $47,674. Males have a median income of $35,128 versus $26,720 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,250. 11.2% of the population and 9.2% of families are below the poverty line. As of the census of 2000, there are 29,581 people, 12,498 households, and 7,698 families residing in the town. The population density is 1,440.3/km² (3,728.7/mi²). There are 13,186 housing units at an average density of 642.0 persons/km² (1,662.1 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 93.78% White, 1.11% African American, 0.35% Native American, 1.42% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.44% from other races, and 1.88% from two or more races. 3.10% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
