In 1716 the Decretos de Nueva Planta abolished the Generalitat de Catalunya. Even though this law had not yet been repealed, in 1931 the Generalitat was reestablished.
When President Companys was jailed (1934-36), the Spanish Government appointed presidents, which are not listed.
After the Spanish Civil War, General Franco's dictatorship abolished the Generalitat again. The President Companys went to exile, and German Police returned him to Spain, where he was executed in 1940. The following were presidents in exile:
When democracy was restored, and the Generalitat was legalized, the presidency returned from exile and voters elected Jordi Pujol i Soley president.
