\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,280 km² (494 mi²). 1,267 km² (489 mi²) of it is land and 13 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.02% water.

census2 of 2000, there are 35,466 people, 13,301 households, and 9,510 families residing in the county. The population density is 28/km² (72/mi²). There are 15,143 housing units at an average density of 12/km² (31/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 41.69% White, 56.35% Black or African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.90% from other races, and 0.52% from two or more races. 1.79% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 13,301 households out of which 32.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.30% are married couples living together, 23.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.50% are non-families. 25.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.64 and the average family size is 3.16. In the county, the population is spread out with 27.60% under the age of 18, 9.70% from 18 to 24, 26.80% from 25 to 44, 23.80% from 45 to 64, and 12.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 85.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.40 males. The median income for a household in the county is $26,526, and the median income for a family is $32,932. Males have a median income of $26,133 versus $18,392 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,878. 23.20% of the population and 18.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 33.30% are under the age of 18 and 23.50% are 65 or older.
