census of 2000, there are 5,029 people, 2,001 households, and 1,324 families residing in the city. The population density is 636.6/km² (1,647.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 36.59% White, 61.58% African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.68% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.12% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. 0.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,001 households out of which 29.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 33.1% are married couples living together, 29.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.8% are non-families. 31.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 3.08. In the city the population is spread out with 27.6% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 23.5% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 73.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 65.5 males.
