In the Northern Ireland Assembly elections of 1998, it obtained two members - Monica McWilliams and Jane Morrice, representing South Belfast and North Down respectively. McWilliams, who is also leader and founder of the party, stood as a candidate in the Westminster elections in 2001, and came a respectable third.
The party does not take a position on whether Northern Ireland should be part of the United Kingdom or the Republic of Ireland. It has attracted support from former supporters of the Alliance Party of Northern Ireland, but also the SDLP and the Ulster Unionist Party. Both its MLAs lost their seats in the Northern Ireland Assembly Elections, 2003.
