In
Polynesian mythology,
Rongo ("sound") is the god of
song, peace,
flora and
agriculture, particularly associated with the
sweet potato. He is a son of
Rangi and
Papa and is associated with the
rainbow under the name Kahukura. On
Easter Island, he is a creator god (see the
Rongo Rongo tablets. He lives in
Avaiki, and may have built it beneath Mangaia in the
Cook Islands.
In Tahiti, Rongo is known as Ro'o (also Ro'o-i-Te-Hiripoi) and is considered a god of health, invoked by those who are ill. He also taught shamans the art of medicine. His father is Atea.
