Squirtle's name is a combination of "squirt" and "turtle." Its Japanese name, Zenigame, shall be translated soon. "Kame" is the Japanese word for "turtle". (In Japanese, the consonant at the beginning of a word often "hardens" when it is used as the second part of a compound word; for example, "kami", meaning "paper", changes its K to a G in "origami".)
In Pokémon Red/Blue, Squirtle is one of the starter Pokémon, together with Bulbasaur and Charmander.
In Pokémon Yellow, Squirtle is not a starter; rather, it's obtained in Vermillion City. In Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal, Squirtle must be obtained through trading with another cartridge. In Pokémon Sapphire/Ruby, Squirtle is not available at all.
Squirtle also appears in the Nintendo 64 game Pokémon Snap.
Squirtle is vulnerable to Grass and Electric, and strong against Fire, Water, Ice and Steel.Availability
